Conditioning Masquerading as Personality
Dr. Shefali's challenging premise: much of what feels like fixed, authentic personality — people-pleasing, chronic self-doubt, an instinct to shrink in conflict — is actually deeply internalized conditioning absorbed from family and patriarchal culture in childhood.
Why this conditioning is invisible:
- Operates so early and pervasively it becomes experienced simply as "who I am"
- Not recognized as a learned pattern that could be examined and revised
"Radical awakening" refers to the difficult, often painful process of becoming conscious of these patterns for the first time — recognizing that a lifelong instinct to defer to others was trained into you, not a freely chosen value.
